PMP® Certification Eligibility Requirements

Before you can take the Project Management Professional (PMP)® exam, the Project Management Institute (PMI) requires candidates to meet specific eligibility criteria. These standards ensure that applicants not only understand project management theory but also have real-world experience in leading and directing projects.

As part of the application, candidates must demonstrate:

  • Documented project management experience within the last eight years.
  • A minimum of 35 hours of formal project management education (commonly fulfilled through a structured training program).
  • Professional experience that reflects leadership and responsibility across project phases.

PMI carefully reviews each application, and once approved, you will be formally invited to schedule and take the PMP exam.

High School Diploma, Associate’s Degree, or Global Equivalent

  • At least 60 months of unique, non-overlapping project management experience.
  • 35 contact hours of project management education.

Bachelor’s Degree (Four-Year Degree) or Global Equivalent

  • At least 36 months of unique, non-overlapping project management experience.
  • 35 contact hours of project management education.

Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree from a GAC-Accredited Program

  • At least 24 months of unique, non-overlapping project management experience.
  • 35 contact hours of project management education.

Step 1: Create Your PMI Account & Membership

Step 2: Fulfill the Education Requirement (35 Contact Hours)

  • Complete 35 hours of formal project management education.

  • Earn a certificate of completion that qualifies you to apply for the exam.

  • Apply online through PMI’s portal by documenting your education and experience.

  • Exams are conducted via Pearson VUE:
  • Center-Based Testing (CBT) at test centers.
  • Online Proctored Testing (OnVUE).
  • Candidates have one year of eligibility and up to 3 attempts.
