PMP® Certification Eligibility Requirements
Before you can take the Project Management Professional (PMP)® exam, the Project Management Institute (PMI) requires candidates to meet specific eligibility criteria. As part of the application, candidates must demonstrate:
- Documented project management experience within the last eight years.
- A minimum of 35 hours of formal project management education (commonly fulfilled through a structured training program).

PMI carefully reviews each application, and once approved, you will be formally invited to schedule and take the PMP exam.
High School Diploma, Associate’s Degree, or Global Equivalent
- •At least 60 months of unique, non-overlapping project management experience.
- •35 contact hours of project management education.
Bachelor’s Degree (Four-Year Degree) or Global Equivalent
- •At least 36 months of unique, non-overlapping project management experience.
- •35 contact hours of project management education.
Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree from a GAC-Accredited Program

How to Earn the PMP® Certification
The Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification, governed by the Project Management Institute (PMI), follows a structured application and examination process. Step 1: Create Your PMI Account & Membership
- •PMI Membership Fee: $164
- •PMP Exam Fee for Members: $425

Step 2: Fulfill the Education Requirement (35 Contact Hours)
- •Complete 35 hours of formal project management education.

- •Earn a certificate of completion that qualifies you to apply for the exam.
Step 3: Submit Your Application
- •Apply online through PMI’s portal by documenting your education and experience.

- •Once approved, you’ll receive authorization to pay and schedule your exam.
Step 4: Schedule Your Exam
- •Exams are conducted via Pearson VUE:
- Center-Based Testing (CBT) at test centers.

Step 5: Take and Pass the PMP Exam
